‘It’s closer than Didic’: Is the Manny Aparicio sweepstakes nearing an end?

As first reported by The Northern Tribune, star midfielder Manny Aparicio is the latest free agent to be spotted at Atlético Ottawa’s camp. Photos surfaced Tuesday showing the 28-year old Canadian-Argentine in Mexico along with Amer Didic and Toronto FC’s Luke Singh.

Sources close to the negotiations told The Wanderers Notebook a contract has not yet been signed between Aparicio and the club. However, the sides continue to talk as Atlético Ottawa figures out their roster and cap situation.

Atlético Ottawa announced on Monday that defender Karl Ouimette had mutually agreed to terminate his player contract and had stepped into the front office as a business development executive. The club also put out a release disclosing a serious injury to 30-year defender old Jonathan Grant, who will miss the entire regular season. Grant has been placed on the club’s inactive roster list, providing Atlético Ottawa with cap relief.

“It’s closer than Didic,” said one source of the negotiations.

The Wanderers Notebook was also told the league has not received an official complaint concerning Atlético Ottawa’s off-season moves. All clubs are still expected to be salary cap compliant on April 1.

“Atlético Ottawa provides no comment regarding transfer activity, whether the club is involved or not,” read a statement from the club when reached for comment.”
